An interesting question, for those curious people out there. When I chose my degree, or vice versa, I didn't want to be categorised as the 'Maths guy' or spend all my time starting a equations and never see another person, so it began as a BSc in Maths with Spanish at that august institution Aberystwyth University. It eventually did metamorphose into a purely Mathematics degree, not because of any Spanish weakness, but rather by wanting to finish in three years instead of four. In fact, that whole third of the first year that was Spanish grammar, translation and language was passed with flying colours at more than 70%. It was an extremely intensive experience!
Spanish has never gone away from my life, as I have maintained correspondents in that fine language for many years, and practice the written word constantly. It's a fine language, very regular, but with enough rich irregularities to be interesting and a depth in vocabulary so that you can say the same thing in multiple ways, without being overly picky and pedantic. Lovely. It also has the subjunctive tenses, making it a minefield for the unwary, but maybe more on that another time.
¡Viva EspaƱa!
